In this issue: “Where We Are with the Cosmology Edition of The Ecozoic“; “A Time to Pay Tribute to Thomas Berry: The Thomas Berry Edition of The Ecozoic”; and “CES Membership Dues”, each by Herman Greene.
Where We Are with the Cosmology Edition of The Ecozoic
As previously announced, the name of our primary publication will change from The Ecozoic Reader to The Ecozoic: Reflection on Life in an Ecological Age. The first issue, which is now with our layout editor, is called “Cosmology and the Ecozoic Society.” We hope to mail it by the end of July.
A Time to Pay Tribute to Thomas Berry: The Thomas Berry Edition of The Ecozoic
The second issue of The Ecozoic will be entitled simply “Thomas Berry.” Please send us your poems, photographs, artwork, songs, one-two page tributes, and reflections on “What Thomas Berry means to me.” Also, please send your interpretations of aspects of Berry’s work and its importance in essay form. We are flexible on the length of submissions. They may be short or long. Our deadline for submissions is September 9, 2008 (the day after Labor Day in the US), with an absolute outside deadline of September 30, 2008. (Please send in your submissions as early as possible.) We would like to deliver this to Thomas Berry before his 94th birthday, on November 9, 2008.
Please pay attention to copyright issues in your writing and provide footnotes where you are quoting the work of others. We follow The Chicago Manual of Style. For a quick guide, see http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html . The manual is expensive, but a more reader-friendly way of learning the styles used is available in Kate L Turbian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Seventh Edition. For guidelines on “fair use” of a copyrighted work, see http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html and http://fairuse.stanford.edu/ .
We invite you to take a day this summer and write about Thomas Berry as a way of paying tribute to him and to share with our readers.
CES Membership Dues
Over the years, we have changed our policies on membership dues. In the beginning, we didn’t have dues but rather invited people to be subscribers to The Ecozoic Reader. A subscription was for four issues even if the issues came out in separate calendar years.
Today we have members, not subscribers. A membership is for the calendar year. In other words if you become a member in December 2009, you are a member for 2009 and dues will again be due in January 2010. (Of course you may designate your dues for the succeeding year, if you wish.)
So if you have not paid your dues as described below in 2008, you are not current in your payment.
The thinking behind this is that dues are offered by our members in support of our work. Our work is all volunteer (at present) and it goes on all year. It is not tied to publication dates. As a member, you receive the benefits of work we publish in the year, plus access to other resources and services we provide. In addition, you have the opportunity to share in our work. We expect to publish two issues of The Ecozoic this year (in addition to the “Wisdom of Women” issue of The Ecozoic Reader which has already been published), but the timing of when membership dues are payable is independent of that publication schedule.
Dues are for an annual (calendar year) membership and are payable in January of each year.
