To submit an item for publication by CES, email it in Word or Rich Text format to ecozoic.studies@gmail.com. You may also mail a printed copy to the Center for Ecozoic Studies, 2516 Winningham Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 27516, USA. Note, however, that we will not return printed copies that are mailed to us unless you send a self-addressed, stamped return envelope. When you send a submission, please send your contact information, a brief description of yourself that we may use to identify you to our readers, and, preferably, a picture of yourself. Items accepted for publication will be reviewed and edited by CES staff prior to publication. We will consult with you on significant revisions but we may not consult with you otherwise.
Style
Subject to the following paragraph, CES follows The Chicago Manual of Style. For references, you may use either the notes-bibliography style or the author-date style; provided, however, that, if you use the notes-bibliography style, you do not need to have a bibliography. The “Turabian Manual” (Kate Turabian, et al, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations) follows The Chicago Manual of Style and you may use that as a style guide. The “Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide” is available here.
CES uses certain conventions that differ from The Chicago Manual of Style. These are described in the CES Style Manual. You do not need to read and follow the CES Style Manual prior to making your submission, but you should be aware that if your submission is accepted for publication, we will edit it to conform to that manual. We welcome comments on, questions about, and suggestions for our style manual.
Copyright
There are two copyright issues with respect to submissions that we accept for publication: the rights you grant to CES and the rights CES grants to its readers.
Rights Granted to CES
An author who submits an item for publication by CES grants CES a nonexclusive worldwide license, without the right to sublicense, to reproduce and distribute your item in CES publications, educational and event materials, and websites, make reprints of the articles, quote them in CES publications and on this website, and include the items in compilations of items previously published by CES, even if the same would constitute a commercial use; and, in addition unless you request otherwise, to the extent not covered by the foregoing, you grant CES, with rights to sublicense, a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
Rights CES Grants to Its Readers
Unless you request otherwise, CES will inform its readers, with respect to your submission published by CES, that your submission is available to our readers under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
These publication guidelines apply to CES’s two regular publications, which are described below as well as all other CES publications.
The Ecozoic Journal
The Ecozoic Journal contains essays around a particular theme, and we publish it annually.
The New Ecozoic Reader
The New Ecozoic Reader contains essays, poetry, and art concerning the transition to an ecological age, and we publish it bi-monthly.
